Health literacy and human rights

Building trust and equal access to healthcare” represented the opportunity to launch the “Health Literacy Guide” available in eight different languages, which was produced as part of the Strategic Action Plan on Human Rights and Technologies in Biomedicine (2020-2025) to allow all people, including those in vulnerable situations, more effective access to health services and the ability to make appropriate decisions regarding their health. In this perspective, the Guide has been designed as an aid for decision-makers, operators, and health service providers to identify the needs of individuals concerning access to services and the assumption of related responsibilities in health care, prevention of disease, and health promotion.

With a focus on the health literacy needs of individuals and the corresponding responsibilities of health systems, the guide aims to be an informative online resource, illustrated by good practices and tools. It contributes to building trust and equitable access to healthcare by suggesting ways in which decision-makers and health providers can implement health literacy at various individual, organizational, and political levels.
