Media, Digital Innovation, and Ecological Responsibility: Our Commitment to UNESCO’s Greening Education Partnership

Education today carries a profound responsibility: to empower learners of all ages with the knowledge, skills, and values needed to navigate and transform a world facing climate change, biodiversity loss, resource depletion, and deepening inequalities. At the Media Education Centre, we believe that media literacy, digital competence, ethical AI, participatory intelligence (PI), and immersive technologies such as VR are essential tools for building this new generation of empowered, responsible global citizens.

This vision aligns deeply with UNESCO’s Greening Education Partnership (GEP), a global initiative that mobilises governments, civil society, youth, academia, and the private sector to integrate sustainability into every layer of the education system. GEP’s holistic approach, rooted in Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), calls for coordinated action that prepares every learner to thrive in both digital and green economies.

As an organisation dedicated to ethical digital transformation, we proudly support this mission. Our programmes help learners:

  • Understand the ecological impact of digital technologies
  • Use media and AI responsibly to advocate for sustainability
  • Engage in participatory intelligence (PI) to co-create solutions
  • Experience environmental challenges and innovations through VR simulations
  • Strengthen critical thinking, creativity, and civic engagement

Through these tools, we aim to cultivate not only digital skills but also empathy, agency, and ecological awareness — the foundations of a resilient and inclusive future.

We also recognise the vital role of the NGO-UNESCO Liaison Committee, which ensures strong collaboration between UNESCO and its global network of NGO partners. The diverse committee representing all regions, led by Ms Svetlomira Stoyanova, plays a key role in shaping international forums and collective action on UNESCO’s priority themes.

The Media Education Centre stands ready to contribute to this shared effort — building bridges between technology, education, and sustainability, and ensuring that every learner has the opportunity to participate in shaping a greener, fairer, and more humane world.
