\nMedia and Information Literacy (MIL) includes competencies to access,
\ncritically analyze, create, and use information and media in various
\nforms. It is increasingly crucial to all citizens in changing media
\nand information environments, whether we are looking at traditional or
\nnew media.
\n
\nThese competencies, in the 21st century knowledge society, become even
\nmore important when we consider how they can stimulate effective
\nparticipation in dialogue as well as the democratic and governance
\nprocesses.<\/p>\n

Having access to media and information is a necessity but the impact
\nof this access is magnified exponentially when citizens have the
\ncompetencies (knowledge, skills and attitude) to critically and
\neffectively engage with the media, internet and other information
\nproviders.<\/p>\n

In an information driven world, information and knowledge become the
\nlife blood to development and good governance. Achieving the UN\u2019s
\nrecently adopted Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) requires that
\npeople of all levels of society acquire the skills to access and
\ncritically evaluate information, and to effectively engage with media
\nof all forms.<\/p>\n

To this end, UNESCO and DW AKADEMIE, Germany\u2019s leading organization
\nfor international media development in collaboration with the Pan –
\nAfrican Alliance on Media and Information Literacy (PAMIL) and the
\nGlobal Alliance for Partnerships on Media and Information Literacy
\n(GAPMIL) will be holding the 2nd Pan – African Conference on Media and
\nInformation from DECEMBER 1 \u2013 3, 2015<\/span><\/span>, in Abuja, Nigeria.<\/p>\n

The theme of the conference is: \u201cA Culture of Dialogue \u2013
\nCommunication and Information in a Digitalizing World\u201d<\/p>\n

1)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Create a forum for debate on a continental position on MIL
\neducation in order to encourage national policies and strategies for
\nintegrating media and information literacy into school and teacher
\ncurricula;<\/p>\n

2)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Give a voice to students and youths by sharing good practices
\nregarding the development and implementation of continental youth MIL
\ninitiatives;<\/p>\n

3)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Create an awareness of the importance of MIL, and promote the
\nrelevance of MIL as a catalyst for peaceful communication \u2013
\nparticularly in social networks \u2013 and as a culture of dialogue.<\/p>\n

Participants for the 2nd Pan – African MIL Conference will be drawn
\nfrom MIL stakeholders across Africa and beyond, including MIL
\norganizations, media and information providers, government agencies,
\nschools, universities, NGOs, libraries, development partners and youth
\norganizations.<\/p>\n

The conference aims to build on the efforts of the continental MIL
\nplatform, the Pan \u2013 African Alliance on Media and Information
\nLiteracy (PAMIL), and will feature hands – on presentations that
\nprovide current approaches and perspectives on the growing media and
\ninformation literacy field.<\/p>\n

The conference will also include a number of timely participatory
\nworkshops based on key media and information literacy related areas.
\nThe theme \u201cA culture of dialogue\u201d is the conference\u2019s core idea
\nand is reflected in the conference design; it will feature prominently
\nin conference deliberations.<\/p>\n

This 2nd Pan – African MIL Conference comes seven years after the 1st
\nAfrica Media Literacy Conference held in Abuja, Nigeria, from July 30
\n\u2013 31, 2008, which focused on empowering children and youth and
