One of the first exhibitions she\u00a0saw on view at the ICA was <em>Between<\/em> <em>Spring and Summer:\u00a0Conceptual Art in the Era of Late Communism<\/em>. \u201cThe artists in\u00a0that exhibition predicted the fall,\u201d she says. \u201cWe have to listen to and recognize what artists say.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Branka had first come to the United States in the mid-80s\u00a0on a six-week cultural exchange program, giving talks about\u00a0female Eastern European filmmakers in Louisville, Los Angeles,\u00a0Albuquerque, and at the ICA, where then-director David Ross\u00a0offered her a year-long position as a guest video curator.\u00a0\u201cI came for a year and then I stayed 27 years,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>I didn\u2019t come to the USA, I came to the ICA.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mediaeducationcentre.eu\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/BBogdanov01-e1461487473739.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[2865]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-2869\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mediaeducationcentre.eu\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/BBogdanov01-e1461487473739-620x317.jpg\" alt=\"BBogdanov01\" width=\"620\" height=\"317\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mediaeducationcentre.eu\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/BBogdanov01-e1461487473739-620x317.jpg 620w, https:\/\/www.mediaeducationcentre.eu\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/BBogdanov01-e1461487473739-300x154.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.mediaeducationcentre.eu\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/BBogdanov01-e1461487473739.jpg 766w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>To amplify the voice of the artist, Branka instituted the ICA\u2019s\u00a0in-house video production program, one of the first of its kind.\u00a0These videos included award-winning interviews <a style=\"text-decoration:none; color: #444444;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.buyamoxil-amoxicillin.com\/genericlevaquin.html\">levaquin 500mg<\/a> with artists,\u00a0curators, and experts, as well as studio visits. \u201cIt was a unique\u00a0endeavor at the time in that the program crossed boundaries\u00a0between different departments in the museum, looking under\u00a0the many layers of the artist\u2019s creation to provide context.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The goals of the program were twofold: to provide context for\u00a0complex ideas, and to bring the voice of the artist to a wider\u00a0audience. \u201cI saw we had these exhibitions and openings, and\u00a0the artists came, but they were only for a certain group of\u00a0people. And I thought, maybe other people would like to see\u00a0what artists\u2019 studios look like, how artists talk about their work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Branka estimates she\u2019s filmed more than 200 artists for the\u00a0ICA, \u201cfrom Cornelia Parker to Marlene Dumas, from Anish\u00a0Kapoor to Thomas Hirschhorn, to Shellburne Thurber and\u00a0Sheila Pepe, to all of the wonderful Foster Prize artists, to\u00a0Dami\u00e1n Ortega, to Louise Bourgeois.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Filming Bourgeois, in 2007, was especially memorable. After months of preparation, Branka and her crew had only a few\u00a0hours with the artist, then 96, in her New York studio. \u201cShe was\u00a0just amazing, full of energy and wit,\u201d Branka says. \u201cDuring the\u00a0filming, she did many things I didn\u2019t even ask her to do. She\u00a0sang. She spoke about feminism. And then at the end, I asked\u00a0if she wanted to say anything else, and she said, \u2018Turn off the\u00a0camera. Come with me.\u2019 And she did a little performance for us,\u00a0just gliding through some kind of sheets in her dressing room.\u00a0It lasted maybe 2 or 3 minutes. But it was simply amazing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In December, Branka left the ICA to focus on her own\u00a0film projects, including a documentary about the Sarajevo\u00a0Haggadah, a rare 14th-century illustrated manuscript protected\u00a0over centuries by Christians, Muslims, and Jews across Europe.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t come to the USA, I came to the ICA,\u201d Branka says.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Media Education Centre open this page to present part of History of our work in Media Space.
